AS Monaco have signed Filipe Luis as their new manager, but missed out on a double swoop for the Brazilian and Thiago Scuro. Luis will take charge of the Ligue 1 club, while Scuro remains with the team as sporting director. The news comes after Sky Germany journalist Florian Plettenberg revealed that Bayer Leverkusen wanted to appoint Luis, but negotiations were advanced as revealed. The problem was that Luis only holds the CONMEBOL coaching licence, not the UEFA Pro Licence. Leverkusen were in contact with UEFA to find a solution, but the process took time. Luis did not want to wait, especially as Monaco were also pushing for him. Monaco are now prepared to pay fines of up to €25,000 per match if necessary. If no special exemption is granted, his CONMEBOL licence would automatically be recognised as a UEFA Pro Licence after three years as a head coach. Luis has been Flamengo head coach for around 1.5 years. According to Marco Guidi of La Gazzetta dello Sport, Filipe Luis was also an option for Milan, linked to Thiago Scuro arriving as the new director. It’s no coincidence therefore that he ended up precisely at Monaco where the Brazilian sporting director remained. After taking over the senior squad at Flamengo in September 2024, Luis won five senior titles in just 16 months, winning 64 of 101 games across all competitions.
